Off-Road Research:
Homework hub

Check this page nightly and weekly for homework updates, videos, assignment forms, and more.  This is your REST STOP for all things related to homework!  Let's build student independence and responsibility together!
NEED HELP? CHECK OUT THE CALENDAR FOR HOMEWORK HOTLINE TIMES!

Check NIGHTLY for Homework Assignments.

typical homework tasks:

Nightly reading (20+ min/night)
Record choice reading on Biblionasium.
Word work practice on SpellingCity -or-
monthly spelling choice menu (FUN!)
Math practice on ALEKS or homework page.

Additional assignments may be made based on season, need, etc. Such changes will be
noted on the homework calendar above.

ClassDojo points (awarded or deducted) are how we will track homework responsibility. I say responsibility PURPOSELY instead of completion. This is because I understand that things come up, schedules get tight, and tech problems arise.

In typical circumstances, homework is expected to be completed and Mrs. Petlak is able to track home practice on all three digital sites. However, if something comes up, the MOST IMPORTANT task is for your child to somehow notify me (via email and/or homework hotline, etc.). Usually I can help them with the issue and/or at least be notified ahead of time if they forget something at school, have a late practice, etc. It's this type of self-responsibility that is truly important.

Enrichment Opportunities:

If you want additional homework or ways to challenge your child at home, we have some great, open-ended, project-based, self-paced opportunities for you and your child!

I am in the process of creating an engaging, self-directed student home enrichment portal.

This site will house links to awesome 4th grade webquests, options for independent projects at home, forms to submit suggestions for enrichment at home, and more.

Until I complete the site, take a sneak peek at one example of student-directed home enrichment HERE. This US regions webquest ties to our curriculum and integrates NUMEROUS learning standards across all subject areas. Students will proceed at their own pace and complete the tasks as directed by the webquest. When completed, I will meet with the student at school to review what they have achieved and discuss home extensions.

If your child thinks of a great home exploration on their own, they will be able to fill out a form on the enrichment page to submit their proposal to me & proceed!

(WHEN MRS. PETLAK IS BACK) TO WATCH & SKETCH.

In our novel (Year of the Boar), Bandit decided to choose Shirley Temple Wong as her American name. We discussed WHY Shirley Temple was significant as aN American icon at the time of the novel, her characteristics, and what Bandit hoped to accomplish by choosing that name.

When we watched the video clip below, we noticed the AMAZINGLY JUICY WORDS AND DESCRIPTIONS used in the song.  ALL of us had mental movies playing in our minds.  We are going to SKETCH THOSE MENTAL IMAGES!!

If you would like to watch ahead and start a draft sketch of your mental images from this song, then watch the video below and study the lyrics (words to the song) that are at the bottom.

Your mom and dad will probably get a kick out of this and it's a MUCH more pleasant video than one on FOOT BINDING!!!

    Lyrics (words) to
    Good Ship lollipop:

    On the good ship
    Lollipop
    Its a sweet trip
    To the candy shop
    Where bon-bon's play,
    On the sunny beach
    Of peppermint bay
    Lemonade stands,
    Everywhere
    Crackerjack bands,
    Fill the air,
    And there you are,
Happy landings on a chocolate bar.
    See the sugar bowl
    Do a tootsie roll
In a big bad devils food cake,
    If you eat too much,
    Oh, oh,
    You'll awake,
    With a tummy ache.
